Enhancing Eco-efficiency and Sustainability in Primary Industry Sector in Thailand

Summary
This project is the second phase under the program “Livable Society with Business Concerning on Environment: CSR in Practice” supported by Siam Cement Group (SCG) which aims to activate social responsibility of enterprises, drive and be inspired them to operate business in sustainable manner. 
The activities in first phase carried out during 2005-2006 intend to raise the interest of entrepreneurs to encompass CSR principle into their business policies through publicizing compilation of good environmental management practices in various kinds of industries and the dinner talk delivering a speech by Mr.Anand Panyarachun, the former Prime Minister that gathered more than 500 executives from top business enterprises in Thailand.
 
The main objectives of the project are:
 
1) To demonstrate feasibility of improving eco-efficiency and sustainability in primary industry in Thailand through the enhanced environmentally sound entrepreneurship, corporate management nand CSR in business sector, SMEs in particular, through pilot cases in regard to environmental concerns including reduction of raw material, energy, natural resources and pollutants with CT and LCA tools,
 
2) To examine, identify and experiment enabling conditions for realizing better eco-efficiency and sustainability in partnership among business, communities and regulatory authorities.
 
3) To explicitly demonstrate the return benefits in monetary form gathered from CSR implementation such as reduction of investment cost and additional profit,
 
4) To raise social and environmental responsible awareness of small-medium scale industrial owners together with wealth creation,
 
5) To decrease conflict and create partnership between a local business and surrounding communities, and
 
6) To draw and consolidate lessons for reference by national entrepreneurs and stakeholders, and overseas partners particularly in the context of promoting eco-efficiency and sustainability through environmental corporate management and CSR in Asia.
 
Key activities
 
Activity 1- Selection of pilot enterprises: 16 pilot enterprises, 8 from rice mill and the other 8 factories from primary raw rubber material process SMEs will be selected
 
Activity 2- Preparation of the enterprise’s readiness before implementing CSR, CT and LCA: Project details will be explained to the select enterprises.
 
Activity 3- Exchange opinions among stakeholders before project implementation: Meeting between involving stakeholder will be held in order to exchange their opinion.
 
Activity 4- CSR, CT and LCA implementation: The implementation phase shall be divided into 2 phases, demonstration phase and dissemination phase
 
Activity 5: Establishment of guide book in applying CSR, CT and LCA principles into practices for business sector, SMEs in particular, by using rice mill and primary raw material process factory as the case studies
