Appropriate Technology Park for Climate Change Adaptation and Environment Friendly Coping Strategy
Implementation Organization : ChangeMaker: Society for Social and Economic Development
Country : Bangladesh
Project Area : Climate change and energy
NetRes : IGES
Duration of Project : 12 months
Status : Ongoing

Summary

Bangladesh is particularly vulnerable to the impact of climate change. As a deltaic country some 70% of the country is at risks of flooding and over 20% of the country experiences ’normal flooding during the monsoon period every year. Climate changes impact in Bangladesh has been assessed in IPCC reports that include changes in temperature and precipitation pattern. Related risks included the increase in frequency of flooding, increase in duration of the flood due to drainage congestions following sea level rise, increase in period of drought. Tropical cyclones, Tornadoes and Tidal surges have serious and adverse impacts on livelihoods and the environment causing loss of lives, property, crops infrastructures and damage to natural resources. The project would address the critical issue of Environmental Degradation and the effects of Climate Changes that are increasingly felt in Bangladesh. The project therefore would focus on preparing the community to live a more environmentally friendly livelihood and develop strategies to adapt to the conditions of climate change. The project aims to develop an appropriate technology park demonstrating appropriate technological solutions to cope with the environmental degradation and climate change conditions.

The project through demonstration of technologies and creating linkage with solution providers would create awareness, educate and build capacity to understand and embrace the environmental friendly technological solutions to cope with the climate change conditions. Technologies like simple water harvesting during drought, water filter for safe drinking water, fuel efficient cooker to save trees, back yard composting, using renewable energy – solar, wind, etc., promotion of soilless floating agriculture (hydroponics) in the inundated area for food security, promotion of floating house in the flood prone area, etc. It is critical that people have knowledge and access to these important technologies. Creating awareness, creating access and availability through developing and strengthening supply chain and integrating research organizations, government departments, private sector enterprises and other actors and stakeholders will be the primary mandate of the project. “Seeing is believing” is the critical philosophy of the rural people. By demonstrating the technologies in the park, the group of rural people would be able to see, feel and understand how it can improve their day-to-day livelihood.

Key Activities

1. Identification and selection of location regularly inundated during the flood
2. Setup a technology demonstration park to display the various technologies
3. Sourcing appropriate technologies
4. Develop appropriate linkage with different government, non-government and private sector organizations, agencies and institutions for showcasing appropriate affordable life-saving technologies that has bearing on livelihood improvement.
5. Develop appropriate awareness materials
6. Organize awareness building events for farmers, women, youth groups on different technologies
7. Organize capacity building training programs for different groups on different technologies
8. Develop awareness on how we all can help reduce environmental degradation
9. Develop awareness on climate change issues and coping strategies
10. Develop appropriate service providers (masons, technicians, etc.,) for smooth adoption of technology
