Title of the Project
Sustainable Development of settlement in Karakum desert (Turkmenistan)
Summary
New trends of research using GIS–technology is used in this project and special attention will be paid to the socio-economic aspects of desertification in Turkmenistan using PRA (Participatory Rapid/Rural/Relaxed Appraisal) methods.
The cost price of electrical energy produced by alternative methods already approaches the cost of electrical stations operating on hydrocarbon fuel. The lack of infrastructure is the principal constraint to the development of new and alternative energies.
The prolonged (over 15 years) guaranteed functioning of solar electrical power systems and the possibility of energy accumulation for nighttime use as well as the ecological benefits that confers an incontestable advantage to these installations in the conditions of remote desert regions.
Key Activities
Karakum deserts have pasture massifs. Practically all over the desert territory there are arborous shrubs and grassy vegetation spread out which is used for pastures. Where there are no fresh underground water sources cattle-breeders and shepherds make the best use of surface runoff by means of collection and storage. Accumulated water is used not only for sheep and camels but also for drinking purposes and to satisfy the economic and everyday needs of the population. Where there is no system of collection but where the soil thickness is saturated by means of precipitation, melon seeds are sown to obtain yields.
Key activities will be dune stabilization, improvement of pasture land, use of solar energy for lighting of shepherd’s houses and the establishment of small gardens for vegetables and medical plants.
The project aim will generate tangible outcomes in changing behaviours and business practices toward enhancing sustainability, and improving environmental performance.
