Supporting the Green Consumer Initiatives in the Republic of Korea

To pursue the eco-friendly production and consumption, it is essential to set out eco-product standards, develop evaluation systems, provide eco-products & environmental trend information to the public, facilitate production of eco-products, and construct the eco-product consumption system.

 

While Republic of Korea has been contributing the regional and global partnership on the certification of green products with Japan, China including Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand, such standard-setting and the certification system development have not yet been widely introduced in Asia. While there is a great potential in generating spin-off effects from the countries advanced in green product certification and consumer movements to those that lag behind, Asia has not capitalised upon such potentials.

 

The project is intended to draw lessons learned from the green consumer networks already existent and operational in Asia, and explore modalities for enhancing and replicating such systems as a critical part of the endeavours for promoting environmental management and sustainable development.

(i) Assessing the policies and mechanisms of green consumption and consumerism in major countries in Asia;

(ii) Examining the baseline for evaluating environment-friendliness of products,

(iii) Analyzing the effectiveness of support programmes

(iv)Market development analysis

(v) Pilot activities for case studies

(vi) Development of Asia regional mechanisms for green consumption initiative and consumerism
