Launching of two UNEP publications under the APFED Showcase programme

The APFED Showcase Programme has produced two capstone publications entitled “Casebook on Innovative Activities for Achieving Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific” and “Environmental Dispatches: Reflections on Challenges, Innovation and Resilience in Asia-Pacific”. The two UNEP Publications were launched in a virtual webinar on 28 May 2015.  The event was participated by partner organizations, APFED collaborators, journalists, researchers and UNEP colleagues.

In the event, Mr. Kaveh Zahedi, UNEP’s Director and Representative for Asia and the Pacific addressed the webinar through a video recording and underscored the value of the two publications. According to him, the “Casebook on Innovative Activities for Achieving Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific” was UNEP’s way of presenting the sustainable solution options to problems such as human-wildlife conflicts, lack of sanitation, energy availability, biodiversity loss and more for the grassroots; while the “Environmental Dispatches: Reflections on Challenges, Innovation and Resilience in Asia and the Pacific” offers a journalistic perspective to the similar approaches. “The publications are a sourcebook for policymakers and practitioners to realize the results of innovative activities towards policy development, technology application, social mobilisation and partnership building; and inspiration for journalists to portray ingenuity of communities in the region to address pressing environmental challenges and embark on the sustainability path” said Mr. Zahedi.

Casebook on Innovative Activities for Achieving Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific

The publication demonstrates empirical lessons and valuable insights into local innovations in the areas of climate changes, biodiversity and ecosystems, waste management, water conservation, capacity development and stakeholder empowerment. By sharing these innovative activities, UNEP hopes to offer solution options to other communities and increase, helping to put Asia Pacific on the path to sustainable development from the ground-up.

Environmental Dispatches: Reflections on Challenges, Innovation and Resilience in Asia-Pacific

The publication is a compilation of stories and reports by ten journalists from the Asia Pacific region on pressing environmental challenges and innovative actions on a broad spectrum of environmental issues - adaptation and resilience to climate change, access to and use of natural resources, mitigation of land-based pollution, solid waste management and energy efficiency, among others. It provides journalism students and individuals with a birds-eye view of the kind of articles, reports and investigative pieces that can be done to portray the state of the environment in the region, challenges and innovative actions as expressed through the voices of those at the grassroots striving to cope with environmental threats as well as within their communities.
